Oki families and friends,

There was lots of learning taking place again in Room 71 this week.

The Terry Fox run was on Thursday afternoon.  It began with an assembly in the gym and then the students were off and running.  I was not absent yesterday so, unfortunately, I did not get to participate in all the celebrating.  I heard they did a great job and took the substitute teachers by surprise.  In her notes to me she said, "The kids a great knowledge base of Terry".  They generated some questions for us to learn more about, as well, after the run.  They also worked on an illustration, with accompanying writing, on themselves running alongside Terry and wrote about who or what they are running for.  Ask your child what they wrote about.  Thank you for donating to the cause. Our class raised $43.

Math consisted of our daily "Number of the Day" and all the ways we can show it.  We up to 17  - our 17th day at school so far this year.  I have been challenging the students to come up with equations for the number of the day.  We investigated the number zero with some stories and discussion.  This was followed up by and practice in printing the digit and the number word, using tally marks, equations, drawing, the ten frame, in addition to, one more and one less.  They continued this study with the number "1" and "2".  They played Connect 4 - their favourite math game, as well as some other number sense games, including counting forward and backward from 0-20.  We are making another graph - our favourite colour, which is not only math based but is the beginning of our upcoming study on colour in science.

Students wrote about their weekend on Monday, after sharing in our circle about their weekend.  We continued our study of the the letter F as well and students wrote a mini letter to our "Star of the Week" Kira and about Terry Fox.  They continued practicing reading to self and doing amazing with this learning task.  They really enjoy this time each day.  Ask your child about some of the books that have been reading (this may, of course, be reading the stories by looking at the pictures).

You may have noticed that I did not send you any new sight words on Monday.  I have not yet tested the students on any of their 15 sight words.  I feel that they are not quite ready and we need to slow down a bit.  I am hoping to move on by mid-week next week.  For a while we may study new words for 1 & 1/2 to 2 weeks to ensure that these beginning sight words are well grounded into their memories.

The students now have their MATHLETICS Username and Password.  I sent a copy of it home today in the communication folders.

Please note:  There a number of students that are not using their communication folders.  Please remind your child to pack this folder into their backpack each morning before school.  We may not use it every day but when we do have things to send home, such as the tiny business card sized Mathletics log on information, we want to ensure that you are receiving important school information.  Thank you!

Please send a water bottle with your child if you have not done so already - thanks!

Enjoy your weekend!
