Happy Friday families & friends,

The highlight of the week for the students was the dance residency, complete with class recital, on Friday.  Over the course of the week they learned about Bollywood, Latin and Hip Hop dance.  It was great to see how excited all of the students were when they went to gym each day for dance and when they came back as well, after learning some new dance moves.  Well done grade 1s - your dance performance was amazing!

Our investigation with measurement continued, with students comparing which "filled" containers hold more water and which ones hold less.  Ask your child what differences they discovered in investigating capacity this week.  Comparing masses was really fun and exciting for the students as well.  They worked in pairs to find things in the classroom that were lighter and heavier than one of their books from their reading tub.  The grade 1s were in awe with seeing and the balance scales to compare and learn about masses.  The students also worked tirelessly on math word problems, ensuring that they were completing each step of the process in order to help them be successful.  Ask your child what the 4 steps are in working through a math word problem.

Language arts was just as exciting and fun as the students continued to work on their robot and mouse stories, continuing to learn and practice self-editing and working towards their next writing goal.  We read and reviewed several poems this week and then the grade 1s stretched their creative thinking to write their own poem about colour.  They selected one colour and had to describe that colour using their 5 senses.  Wow!  They created some really interesting poetic masterpieces!  Students are learning and reviewing the grade 1 sight words by playing games and doing several different activities.  The favourite, of course, is playing BINGO with the sight words - especially when Ms. Klein has little prizes for winners.

In science, the students conducted several science experiments about their senses and learned what optical illusions are.  They thought this was the coolest!  Ask your child to tell you about their favourite experiment this week and what they discovered in the process.  Next week we will complete the unit with some taste testing investigations.  The grade 1s also starting drawing about the spring season in their visual journals, drawing pictures of changes they see in trees and plants, activities we can do in the spring, what kind of clothing we wear in the spring and what some animals might be doing in the spring.

Enjoy your weekend!
