LIBRARY

This is a reminder that our class visits the library every Monday morning at 8:30.  Please remind your child to pack their books in their backpack.  They are allowed to check-out 2 books, but cannot take out new books if they have other books still signed out.  Some students were not able to borrow any books this past week. Thanks!

Oki families and friends, There was lots of learning taking place again in Room 71 this week. The Terry Fox run was on Thursday afternoon.  It began with an assembly in the gym and then the students were off and running.  I was not absent yesterday so, unfortunately, I did not get to participate in all the celebrating.  I heard they did a great job and took the substitute teachers by surprise.  In her notes to me she said, "The kids a great knowledge base of Terry".  They generated some questions for us to learn more about, as well, after the run.  They also worked on an illustration, with accompanying writing, on themselves running alongside Terry and wrote about who or what they are running for.  Ask your child what they wrote about.  Thank you for donating to the cause. Our class raised $43. Math consisted of our daily "Number of the Day" and all the ways we can show it.  We up to 17  - our 17th day at school so far this year.  I have been challenging the s

Hello families, It was great to meet the majority of you during the "Meet-the-Teacher" interviews last Thursday and Friday.  Thanks for dropping by and learning about what and how your child will be learning in Room 71 this year. The students continued their exploration of numeracy with our daily number chart and practiced representing the number 8 in their workbooks.  They played numerous math games as well to strengthen their knowledge of the numbers 1-20.  We looked at and discussed patterns and graphing.  Next week we will make some more graphs such as graphing each students favourite colour. On Monday they journaled and drew pictures about their weekend after we shared our memories in our heart circle.  The grade ones continued their letter study with the letters D and E and practiced their new word wall words with more fun activities and word searches.  They wrote about what they are really good at and what they would like to get better at for our "Growth Min

Happy Friday parents, With a full week of school in, the students have counted 9 days that they have been here so far.  We continue our number sense awareness with our daily number of the day, displaying all the different ways we can show that number.  The students also did their own work on the number 4 in their new math books.  They were excited to play several different addition games this week also with dice. Ask your child which one was their favourite.  We began skip counting by 2s as well. The students began learning about the two different sounds that the letter "a" makes and did some activities based on this, in addition to some word wall word fun stuff.  I have decided to do weekly spelling tests on our word wall words.  On Monday we will have a test on the first 8 words that I gave to the students last week and which are posted on this blog.  We continued work on our letters (A, B & C) and were introduced to punctuation and what a sentence should look like

Hello families, This year, as part of math (learning to graph), we will be keeping track of LOST TEETH.  If your child loses a tooth or teeth this year, please send me a quick e-mail or a quick note in your child's communication folder.  They will then have the opportunity to shade in a tooth on our monthly graph, in addition to, being awarded a prize from the treasure chest. Enjoy your evening! Julie

Happy Friday Families! Welcome to our classroom blog!  What a wondrous week!  The grade one students are settling in very nicely with broad smiles and bursting at the seams with excitement.  The week was one of learning routines and asking lots of questions. Here are just some of the things we did this week: Eager students created and shared a "Me Bag" to help everyone get to know each other better and were introduced to the "Star of the Week" program, including "Mickey" the Bear, that we will carry out this year in our room.  They are really excited about this, especially being able to take Mickey home with them for the weekend and to sit in the very special, "Star of the Week" chair for the entire week that they are the star. The students played some math games this week - addition challenge in pairs with dice and matching numbers to number words.  They learned how to "count on" - ask your child to show you on some dice.  They
