Happy Friday Families!

Welcome to our classroom blog!  What a wondrous week!  The grade one students are settling in very nicely with broad smiles and bursting at the seams with excitement.  The week was one of learning routines and asking lots of questions.

Here are just some of the things we did this week:

Eager students created and shared a "Me Bag" to help everyone get to know each other better and were introduced to the "Star of the Week" program, including "Mickey" the Bear, that we will carry out this year in our room.  They are really excited about this, especially being able to take Mickey home with them for the weekend and to sit in the very special, "Star of the Week" chair for the entire week that they are the star.

The students played some math games this week - addition challenge in pairs with dice and matching numbers to number words.  They learned how to "count on" - ask your child to show you on some dice.  They also coloured a personalized paper birthday cake, drawing candles on top of it to match their current age.  We put these into a graph form according to month, which we will discuss next week.  We began counting the school days, practicing the many different ways we can display a number.  Give your child a number and ask your child to show you a few ways they can represent a number.

The grade ones began illustrating the front cover of their visual journals and added 2 things to its pages - activities centered around the book,  "The Kissing Hand".  Ask your child about the art work and activity they did about this story.

The students also learned about the word "interrupting" after we read "Please Don't Interrupt" and had a discussion about this.  They then began exercising their patience and learning more about respect when they needed to speak to the teacher.  They are a wonderful group of students, who are already making many good choices at school and learning about routines and practices very quickly.  I am so proud of them already!

They challenged themselves to learn how to spell and read 8 new sight words by practicing their printing skills in their new workbooks.  We will do more work with these words next work, including some fun games.  The words are:

a
to
me
it
is
I
in
go

Hope your weekend is fun filled and memorable!
