Hello families of grade 1 students: The students have been getting really excited have been enjoying Halloween jokes throughout the week.  Perhaps they could share some of these with you.  Ask them to tell you a joke.  Here's one we used as part of our assembly today. How do you make a witch scratch?  Take off the "w". "Belonging" is our current topic in social studies, which was also the title of a poem we read together.  We talked throughout the week about the meaning of this poem and the different groups we belong to, including the value of being part of a group.  We read books about belonging and about one group in particular: our families.  The grade 1s drew little pencil pictures displaying "a group" of their choice from "jobs groups", ", which we then attached to our "Belonging" poem on chart paper.  They also coloured a picture of themselves belonging to a group and will be asked to bring in an item or items to re

Good evening families, I apologize for not getting the blog out last week.  As I am sure you are all aware, the past month has been a month full of sickness in our school for children and teachers alike.  I was really under the weather last week and appreciate your understanding. We have completed our STEAMed Turkeys projects.  It was a very exciting project for the students, especially making slime for the turkey wattles and engineering a device that would help Turkey Tot get the blackberries from the top of the bush.  They used toothpicks and cranberries to make their creations.  There was some really interesting devices made to help Turkey Tot.  Ask your child what they built.  They absolutely loved the science experiment as well.  They learned about the scientific method while making red slime for the turkey's wattles.  In fact, we made 3 different kinds of slime and compared their colours and their characteristics.  Ask your child what they discovered about the 3 different

Hola Friends & Families, Here are a few of the things we did this week: Our science topics (colours & seasonal changes) were embedded in our discussions and other curriculum work this week. Has your child told you yet what they learned about a rainbow?  Please see the letter that was sent home today regarding our fall walk next Thursday to look at seasonal changes.  I am looking for 2 volunteers to accompany us to the pond that day.  Please let me know if you are interested. We began a guided drawing study today, which I hope to do every Friday.  The students were very excited about it and not a pin drop could be heard during the lesson.  Ask your child what they learned how to draw this morning. We also started a STEAM project about a turkey named TOT.  The students are learning about making predictions with this LA story and began making special "math" turkeys. We will be doing some fun science, technology and engineering next week to further this project.
