Good evening families,
I apologize for not getting the blog out last week. As I am sure you are all aware, the past month has been a month full of sickness in our school for children and teachers alike. I was really under the weather last week and appreciate your understanding.
We have completed our STEAMed Turkeys projects. It was a very exciting project for the students, especially making slime for the turkey wattles and engineering a device that would help Turkey Tot get the blackberries from the top of the bush. They used toothpicks and cranberries to make their creations. There was some really interesting devices made to help Turkey Tot. Ask your child what they built. They absolutely loved the science experiment as well. They learned about the scientific method while making red slime for the turkey's wattles. In fact, we made 3 different kinds of slime and compared their colours and their characteristics. Ask your child what they discovered about the 3 different colours of slime.
Besides writing on the turkeys wing what they are thankful for, they also wrote predictions about the story "Turkey Tot" and how he was going to get the blackberries down from the top of the bush. The math consisted of showing what they know about the number 9 on 6 different feathers on their turkey. They did lots of work first in their math book representing this number and trying to make some equations for the number 9. I started making videos today, interviewing the students about their STEAM projects. Over the next few weeks they will be posted in IRIS and we hope to have a few of them shown in the assembly next Friday.
We continued our study and memorization of sight words through fun games and activities at our literacy centers. The students especially enjoyed making their words with the pumpkin pie playdough and also building their words with lettered blocks. We will begin learning a new set of words on Monday, which means that we will have a test on Monday of the words: the, and, here, can, big, for & said. We did this test a few weeks ago but the students did not have a great deal of success remembering how to spell the 7 sight words. Please help your child study their words this weekend. For those families that visited my centers last night during Literacy night, you can use those ideas to help make learning these sight words fun for your child.
We continued on with our letter recognition and printing practice with the letter G and played math games and activities at centers to strengthen the students number sense. In addition, we played bean bag circle counting games, which the students had a lot of fun with. We did some more exploration in science with the fall season, which consisted of what it looks like, what we wear and what the weather is like during this season. We also talked about our 5 senses and what we can see, feel, smell, taste & hear in the fall season. Ask your child what they drew.

From our music teacher Ms. Thomas:
Artist of the Week:
Michael Jackson
In the spirit of Halloween, the “King of Pop” will be our artist of the week. Starting his career in the 1960s, Michael Jackson was a vital member of his family’s pop group, “The Jackson 5”. Continuing his career with Motown Records, MJ went solo in the 1970s, eventually leading us to his era of greatness in the 80s. We will be listening to some of his greatest hits including: I Want You Back, ABC, Billie Jean, and of course, Thriller. Students will also get a taste of the impact he made on dance culture.
GENRE of the Week:
This week is going to be slightly different in that we will be focusing on exploring a style of music rather than one artist. Looking back at the artists we have been working with over the past couple weeks, one might notice that they each have one thing in common: all have roots in The Blues. This week we will be enjoying the song writing of old Delta Blues characters such as Robert Johnson, to the Chicago electric styles of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and finally, the late great B. B. King.
One thing is for certain, the majority of popular music from the last 60 (or more) years can somehow trace roots back to the blues.
Enjoy your weekend!
Julie
