Good evening families,

I hope everyone is staying warm.  I have had enough of winter already and I don't usually mind winter at all - lol.

This past week the grade 1s continued their exploration of patterns by working with a partner to develop sound patterns, movement patterns and then making a combination of the two to perform for the class as we all tried to guess what their pattern was each time.  They have also been having a lot of fun creating patterns in their math book with stamps, stickers and paper punches.  The students have some homework for the weekend, which I sent home with them on Thursday.  They are to look for patterns in their home, inside and out, and record them in writing and/or pictures on the sheet that was provided, which outlines the homework.

Our guided reading groups are in full swing now.  I meet with 2 groups each day while other students work at a centre.  This is our "Daily 5" literacy program.  It includes "Listen to Reading" where students listen to stories on RazKids, Tumblebooks or Starfall.  Other students spend time writing on a given writing exercise which could include free writing, writing from a picture or word prompt, and making greeting cards or filling in bucket filling slips for friends and family.  Word word could include making the weekly words out of playdough or being challenged by a word search.  Some students will also spend time reading to self.  We have not yet introduced "read to someone", but will incoporate this within the next few weeks.

Daily word work exercises are also part of our regular routine where we explore the new words with fun movement activities each morning.  We will not be having any more spelling tests, but we will continue to focus on 4 new sight words each week and 4 word family word.  This past week we worked on the "an" word family list.

We concluded our science study on colour with an experiment on separating sunlight into a rainbow.  It was so awesome to see the students' reactions: oohs and ahhs.  They were so excited! We also did some more investigation and writing on seasonal changes.  Ask your child what they wrote about.  We continue our social studies topic on belonging, community and ......

Some students have shared some wonderful artifacts, with their peers, on groups they belong to.  The grade ones are learning about valuing self and others as unique individuals in relation to their world.  Please continue to have your child bring some things from home to share, especially if they have not yet had the opportunity to do so.

For physical education, next week, the students will be developing their skills at curling.  The school is hosting a "Rocks and Rings" residency to work with the children over the course of the week.

I forgot to give them a joke of the day on Thursday.  You can pass this one on:

Knock Knock.
Who's there?
Lettuce.
Lettuce who?
Lettuce in, it's freezing out here!
Artist of the Week

Spice Girls:

Following on the heals of the great girl groups of the 60s and 70s, the Spice Girls emerged as a global girl power phenomenon, decades later. Promoting a culture of positive self-image, they created unique stage personas and embraced collaboration and team work. Their music was upbeat and positive, inciting dance parties across the world.
REMINDERS:

Library is Monday morning at 8:30 am.  Please have your child return their library book so they can sign out some new ones - the library has many wonderful Christmas books that your child is sure to enjoy!

Please send your child to school with a water bottle and a spoon for their lunch/snack if necessary.

Thanks!

Have a super weekend!

Julie
