Hola families & friends,

Our short week began with the students writing about their weekend, striving to write at least 3 sentences and to add details to their journaling to describe their weekend activities by asking themselves questions such as who, what, where, when, why and how, in addition to using "juicy" words (adjectives and adverbs), in order to stretch their writing and make it more interesting.

In Language Arts, they also wrote about different parts of their field trip to the Leighton Centre and drew a picture of their favourite part of their adventure to this art centre, beautifully nestled in the foothills of Alberta.  The trip was spectacular for the students in many ways, even though it was a drizzly dull day and the skies were not clear enough to see the Rocky Mountains at a stones throw away.  They painted a water colour landscape of those mountains, while learning specific water colour painting techniques.  What masterpieces they created!  Following that project, they continued to use their imagination and skills in creating wire tree sculptures.  I invented a unique way to display your child's 3-dimensional tree on our bulletin board in the hallway.  If you have a moment come by and see what the entire class has produced.  The children also enjoyed the nature walk and the museum at the centre.  Ask your child what they remember seeing, doing or learning about in the museum and on their nature walk.

Our investigation in math continues on with measurement.  Area was our big topic of the week with the students drawing robots on grid paper and calculating the area of different parts of their robot in terms of square units.  They then had to compare the size of their hand-drawn robot to a peers robot and record their observations.  The grade 1s also used grid paper to create some heads of flowers, determining their total area and then colouring and cutting them out in order to add them to their spring collection of flowers.   This collection of student-made flowers displays their various art skills through the creation of several different kinds of paper and cardboard flowers to celebrate spring and discover more about the needs of plants.  The students "planted" their 3-D flowers in a 2-D flower pot, all attached by coloured drinking straws and displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway.  The writing task on the front of their pots describes spring in terms of their 5 senses.  Having three little dogs in my family, I had to chuckle when I read one students' spring smelling sensation - "I smell the dog poop!" Our spring bulleting board of learning is truly a lively "springy" feast for the eyes!

We continued our investigation of the the 5 senses with some "eye catching" experiments, some cool educational videos and discussions about how our eyes work and how to take care of them, a classroom scavenger hunt for our eyes, as well as a guided drawing on perspective.  We will continue next week with some of the other senses.

We had a school assembly on Friday, with various classes presenting their learning.  Ask your child about some of the learning that was shared by the other grades.

LIBRARY MONDAY MORNING

FROM MS. THOMAS

Artist of the Week

The Tragically Hip

After much anticipation, we finally have a full week with which we can explore this great Canadian band. The Tragically Hip have left a major impact on the Canadian music scene with their devoted fan base and ability to incorporate Canadian themes in their music.

Hello!

If your child is wishing to participate in the Friday Music Class Talent Shows, Ms. Thomas will be starting auditions next week. Students from our class are invited to audition on Tuesday at lunch time. They are expected to come prepared to share a 90 second (maximum) performance piece. Examples may include a song, an instrumental performance, a dance routine, or other special skills. These are expected to be short, polished performances, as no rehearsal time will be given at school. If your child needs special equipment (i.e. guitar, rubik’s cube, or pan flute) they must bring it to school for Tuesday’s audition as well as their performance day. Large equipment such as the piano, floor mats, etc. will be available at school. If time does not allow for all students to audition during lunch, adjustments will be made throughout the week. Your child’s performance time will be determined after the auditions have been held.

Please remind your child that a Talent Show is an opportunity to showcase something special that they are good at. They are expected to practice this at home and come prepared. Please also ensure that any lyrics being used as school-appropriate.

Thank you!!

Ms. Thomas
